Part & Process is a residential architectural lighting studio based in Bend, Oregon. We focus exclusively on residences because it is the work we enjoy most and where we believe we can make the greatest difference. Our work combines architectural lighting design, product specification, custom lighting, construction support, and final focusing into a process that stays connected from the earliest concepts to the finished home.

 

We’re longtime friends who met as college roommates more than 30 years ago. Our careers in lighting have often overlapped, giving us a broad and complementary range of experience in architectural lighting design, product design and development, engineering, manufacturing, and production. We share a genuine interest in both the design of light and the physical products used to create it, while bringing different strengths and perspectives to the work.

 

Thoughtful lighting design solves problems most homeowners never knew they had. It puts light where it is useful and controls it where it isn't, supports the architecture and materials, makes artwork come alive, and allows a home to change naturally from day to night. When executed well, people often have a difficult time explaining what makes the lighting good. They simply know that their home feels good and works with the way they live.

 

Our combined expertise allows us to look beyond off-the-shelf products. If the right solution does not exist—or if an existing product can be improved for a particular application—we can design and manufacture it. Sometimes it means developing a better architectural lighting tool for practical applications, such as a cove, wall grazer, or art light. Other times, it means designing and building a one-of-a-kind decorative light fixture intended to stand on its own as a statement piece or functional art. In every case, we tailor the product to the project—not the project to the product.

 

Part & Process has primarily grown through referrals and repeat work. Working as part of a team has built long-standing relationships with builders, architects, and interior designers here in Central Oregon. Many of those relationships now span many years and many projects, built on the trust that we will approach each one carefully, solve inevitably emerging challenges, and make thoughtful decisions with the client's goals and budget in mind.

 

For us, a successful lighting project is measured not by the attention the lighting receives, but by how naturally it integrates into a comfortable, functional home.
